We are currently searching for a variety of volunteers who can consistently donate some time to ensure our Foodbank and associated programs run smoothly and effectively. Though there will be some working conditions stated within this volunteer description, most of the requirements do not reflect every volunteer opportunity offered at Port Cares. If a few of the working conditions are not suited for you but would still like to volunteer, we still encourage you to apply!

Volunteer Summary
Working during our Foodbank and Port Cares operating hours, the responsibilities as a Port Cares volunteer includes completing task assigned by the immediate supervisor onsite, upholding the organization’s values, and maintaining a high degree of professionalism with all stakeholders.

- Food Bank Support Volunteer
- Food Bank Warehouse Volunteer
- Food Box Delivery Volunteer
- Meal Program Support Volunteer
- General Volunteer
Main Duties (may include)
- Perform material handling activities such as counting, weighing, sorting, packing and unpacking of food.
- Ensure the maintenance and cleanliness of the food and warehouse storage areas.
- Perform regular inspections of the food and warehouse storage area ensuring all areas are maintained in a “clean as you go state”.
- Report any and all health and safety concerns to Team Lead/ and or Site Supervisor or any staff member at the Reach Out Centre.
- Provide support, assistance and service to the team lead, site-supervisor, staff, other volunteers and co-op students in preparation and delivery of meals and daily food security initiatives.
- Ensure to adhere to safe food handling practices.
- Assist with any cleaning or kitchen upkeep as required.
- Assist with packaging and food distribution as required.
- Works as part of the Port Cares team.
- Promote a positive image to clients.
Other Duties
- Champion vision, mission and values of Port Cares
- Work collaboratively with staff, team, clients and volunteers.
- Participate in the maintenance of a safe, clean and sanitary working environment.
- Observe all fire and safety rules and be on the alert for safety of clients, staff and the public
- Ensure confidential information is secure at all times and client privacy and confidentiality is maintained according to Port Cares’ Privacy policy
- Work as part of the Port Cares team to promote a positive image within the community.
- As appropriate, participate in Port Cares functions/ fundraising activities.
- Adhere to the policies and procedures of Port Cares.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and competencies
- Neat appearance, and well maintained personal hygiene.
- Customer Service skills an asset.
- Ability to work in a team setting.
- Good verbal & communication skills.
- Self-managed, demonstrated initiative and ability to productively multi-task.
- Ability to work with clients who may exhibit mental health and addiction symptoms.
- High degree of patience with others.
- Flexible and adaptable, and able to volunteer during operating times (Monday – Friday, 8:30 – 5:00)
- Safe Food Handling certificate is an asset
- Police Check is required*
*An organizational letter will be provided during the onboarding that will effectively remove the cost for a Police Criminal Record Check, and lower the cost for a Police Vulnerable Sector Check to $20.00.
Possible Working Conditions
- May be working in a warehouse
- May be working in a commercial kitchen
- May require a full G license with a reliable vehicle
- May require some basic knowledge on how to use a computer
- Able to stand on feet for 2 hour lengths of time.
- Ability to consistently and reliably lift up to ~45lbs boxes
- Willing and able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) to safely complete the job when applicable
- Able to hear and speak sufficiently for verbal interaction.
- Able to move swiftly to troubleshoot emergencies.
- Able to withstand body positions of sitting, standing and walking
