This posting will be used to gather applicants for future vacancies. As positions open up, Seniors Services will review and contact candidates for interviews.

Positions may be full-time or part-time, permanent or temporary. Shifts include days, afternoons and midnights.

Positions may come available at any of the long-term care homes that Niagara Region operates in Welland, Port Colborne, Fort Erie, Niagara Falls, Grimsby, or St. Catharines.

All part-time staff must declare a minimum availability of 32 hours per week and commit to working 24 hours per week if the work is available to you.

Conditions of offer include:

  • obtaining a vulnerable sector police clearance that is less than 6 months old from date of hire
  • satisfactory completion of 2-Step TB (Tuberculosis) screening (or chest x-ray)
  • presenting educational qualifications

In order to be employed in our seniors division or any long term care facility, you must possess a current vulnerable sector police clearance that is less than 6 months old. Although it is at the candidate’s discretion, it is encouraged that you obtain a vulnerable sector police clearance due to the length of process time.

Job Summary

Provides housekeeping and laundry support for the residents, staff, and visitors of a Long-Term Care Home with a resident-centred service.

Responsible to perform housekeeping & laundry procedures in accordance with the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of Senior Services as well as the Fixing Long Term Care Act and regulations. Follow established work routines and as directed by the manager, to ensure a safe and clean environment for residents, staff, and visitors of the Long-Term Care Home.

Qualifications & Education

  • Grade 12 or equivalent – required
  • Completion of a recognized course in housekeeping and/or laundry – preferred
  • Training in Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) – asset
  • Knowledge / Experience
  • Up to 1 month current, relevant experience in a long-term care, health care, commercial or institutional setting
  • Previous experience in operating and using commercial/institutional cleaning and laundry equipment and products
  • Knowledge of resident/client safety issues and demonstrated capacity to apply resident/client safety practices

  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to provide resident-centered support with integrity, dedication, compassion, and respect
  • Strong listening, communication, teamwork and relationship-building skills
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing learning, development and training (formal and informal)
  • Good reading, writing and documentation skills
  • Attention to detail

Special Conditions

  • In accordance with the Corporate Policy and applicable Legislation/Regulation(s), the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Police Record Check and submit a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check, as well as complete any subsequent declaration or check as required by legislation/Act, regulation, and/or policy.
  • Compliance with any requirements, including immunization and screening measures, of the infection prevention and control program as required by applicable legislation/Act, regulation, or policy; some measures are only recommendations (not requirements).
  • Staff are required to be screened for Tuberculosis in accordance with the applicable legislation/Act
  • Must be available to work shift work, including holidays, days, afternoons, evenings, and weekends
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position
  • Must have a good attendance record

Responsibilities

General

1. Participate in interdisciplinary team committees and attend in-services.

2. Complete annual professional development and other required training.

3. Respond in emergency situations as per the Emergency Measures Manual and procedures.

4. Follow Infection Control & Prevention (IPAC) guidelines, including enhanced measures during infectious outbreaks.

Housekeeping

1. Perform general housekeeping duties such as cleaning, disinfecting, and dusting all surfaces, walls, flooring, and furniture. Ensuring high touch surfaces are cleaning according to IPAC policies.

2. Complete daily IPAC and work routine checklists, and documentation as required.

3. Perform annual and terminal cleaning of rooms in accordance with the FLTCA and regulations.

4. Empty and clean garbage receptacles and smoking containers as required.

5. Move furniture and other heavy objects as required.

6. Assist with inventory, receive and distribute supplies as assigned.

7. Set-up & tear-down for recreation & special programs.

8. Operate commercial housekeeping equipment as per manuals/SOP. Complete maintenance requisitions and lock-out tag-out procedure for any equipment concerns.

9. Seasonal cleaning may be required (i.e. outdoor furniture).

Laundry

1. Perform general laundry duties such as washing, drying, folding, hanging, and delivering all linen and personal resident clothing.

2. Maintain cleanliness of laundry equipment and work area (i.e. lint traps, soiled laundry bins).

3. Inventory, restocking and requisition of chemicals and supplies as needed.

4. Maintain records of personal clothing of residents.

5. Follow up on missing item referrals as required.

6. Complete daily work sheets and maintain records of laundry weights, as required.

7. Operate label maker, heat press and related equipment for personal clothing labelling.

8. Operate commercial laundry equipment as per manuals/SOP. Complete maintenance requisitions and lock-out tag-out procedure for any equipment concerns

Other related duties as assigned
