Job Description

Under the general supervision of a Parks Operations Lead Hand and within established policies, procedures and guidelines for the responsible and safe operation of licensed road equipment up to 12 ton trucks, truck/snow-plow/salter/ combinations, operates 5 ton knuckle boom crane and waste collection trucks. In addition, to safely operate turf grass maintenance equipment, including mowers, aerators, slit seeders and fertilizer spreaders. Also operates heavy equipment related to landscape construction such as wheel loaders and back hoes for maintenance of soil piles, moving of parks furnishings, brush depot management, soft surface trail reconstruction for the Niagara Parks Commission. Duties also include the safe operation of a variety of small tools and equipment and assigned labour tasks. 

Niagara Parks offers a salary of $27.50 to $33.80 per hour as well as comprehensive benefits and defined benefit pension plan.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of a High School Diploma Grade 12 or GED Equivalent.
  • Class “DZ” Driver’s License and working knowledge of any applicable legislation including the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
  • Willing and able to obtain a Class “AZ” Driver’s License, certification in the operation of a front-end loader, elevated work platforms (EWP) and 8-ton knuckle boom crane.
  • Working knowledge of tools, equipment, methods and practices of landscape and facility maintenance.
  • AZ license and Certification of Qualifications (C of Q) as Heavy Equipment Operator – Excavator considered an asset. 
  •  Two years of related experience and one year on the job.
  •  Ability to operate agricultural, industrial and grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills and ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Willingness to work weekends, afternoons, holidays or other shifts as required.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions.

 

Demonstrated operational experience of industrial and agricultural equipment associated with Park land maintenance and landscape construction such as: 

  • Operation of 5 tonne trucks for summer and winter maintenance activities.
  • Operation of 6 tonne front-end loader for loading of materials and rough grading.
  • Operation of various sidewalk/ turf sweepers/ vacuums, mowing and grounds maintenance equipment (ride on and manual).
  • Operation of an 8 tonne knuckle boom crane for servicing in ground waste containers and other lifting duties.
  • Operation of agricultural tractors and attachments for mowing, tilling, digging (with backhoe) and snow clearing.
  • Operation of medium duty snow plow/truck/salter combinations
  • Operation of aerial lift platforms to assist with Winter Festival of Lights and other tasks when required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Demonstrated operational experience of tools and equipment associated facility maintenance and event support such as:

  • Operation of DZ licensed trucks, large air compressors, leaf vacuums, chainsaws saws, water trucks, sidewalk sweepers, power washers, chain trenchers, generators, slit seeders, waste compactor trucks, sod cutters, triplex rollers, fertilizer spreaders, aerator, industrial front end loaders, agricultural, snow blowers and snowplow / sander tractor.
  • Assists with mounting of snowplows and de-icing equipment; hauls ice and snow away from park areas and hauls materials for projects. 
  • Gain access to site venues during winter storms, often the first response to storm activities 
  • Ability to maintain legible and accurate operational records including equipment circle checks, individual winter snow maintenance, site condition/observation log books.
  • Works at heights using belay and fall arrest equipment to control vegetation growth in areas such as the brink of the falls and on the incline railway hill.
  • Erects and removes safety fence and marker posts, repairs and erects post and rail fencing and marker posts at parking lots.
  • Installs in fall and removes in spring, yearly winter maintenance signs for safety of visitors, records installation and removal of signage in logs.
  • Erects, removes and maintains road/lane closures, barricades in support of NPC Parks operations.
  • Prepares and paints waste cans and equipment.
  • Under the direction of the managers/coordinators/assistant coordinators (or designate) performs a wide variety of manual labour work associated with landscape and facility maintenance.
  • Loads, delivers, and moves materials, supplies and equipment to support Parks maintenance operations.
  • Washes and cleans and trucks and equipment.
  • Knowledge and ability to prepare traffic control plans.
  • Ability to work independently and perform activities based on site/situational requirements of Parks operational duties while unsupervised on winter shift work
  • Updates supervisor of winter storm status and advises on requirements for additional staff for call in.
  • Responds to and takes appropriate action to, emergency/afterhours maintenance calls (e.g. winter maintenance, ice on buildings or event support).
  • Reports broken, lost or defective tools or equipment to Supervisor.
  • Picks up and transports waste and recycle materials within the NPC lands and to of site recycling centers.
  • Safely picks up and transports nursery stock from nurseries to designated park sites for planting.
  • Waters and fertilizes a variety of plants, sod, young trees and annuals with water truck.
  • Pulls plant material from beds and transports plant material to compost.
  • Prepares turf soil areas by hand and equipment, picks up, moves and lays sod.
  • Salts, sands and removes ice and snow from pathways, sidewalks and parking lots and emergency exit doors on buildings to meet the Ontario fire code.
